The Coffee Roaster is a detail-oriented individual responsible for the roasting of high-quality coffees from a green state to specification in a timely, efficient, sanitary, and consistent manner. This person must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, high pressure work environment, working with Quality Assurance to adjust specifications, coordinating with the packaging team, maintaining an inventory system, and conducting regular cleaning and basic maintenance of the roasting equipment. The Coffee Roaster must be prepared to work as a team member in a dynamic workplace and follow all safety procedures.

  • Required to stand, use hands and reach arms, walk, talk, hear, colour vision;
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals;
  • Lifting or moving up to 50 lbs will be required regularly;

  • Dust and high noise level requiring the use of hearing protection;
  • Overtime as required.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Observe machine operation to detect any malfunctions;
  • Prepare green coffee beans for roasting;
  • Batch roast coffee beans and inspect regularly according to specifications;
  • Feed product to conveyors, hoppers, or other feeding devices, and unload product into bins;
  • Work with QA to adjust roast specifications;
  • Conduct regular cleaning and maintenance of roasting equipment;
  • Inspect for quality and accurate quantity at all times;
  • Monitor roasting process to identify needed adjustments or repairs, such as opening valves, changing forming and cutting blades, setting guides, and cleaning away damaged product;
  • Receive information from production schedules and batch tickets;
  • Follow proper reporting procedures for accidents and incidents to ensure follow-up and prevention;
  • Advise the JHSC and your supervisor of any safety hazards;
  • Identify finished product for next stage of process;
  • Empty chaff container every three roasts to prevent roaster fire;
  • Perform weekly ACO on roaster;
  • Retrieve own raw materials from inventory;
  • Prepare inventory transfer documentation;
  • Perform quality control checks at specified intervals and provide samples to Quality Assurance;
  • Responsible to report food safety problems and or quality problems to personnel with authority to initiate actions;
  • Responsible for GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), food safety and quality, and being aware of SQF System Program.
